The Internet Questions People Forget to Ask During PG Visits
Speed matters, but coverage, support, shared usage, and backup decide how the connection feels every day.
Do not stop at the speed number
A broadband plan can look impressive on paper and still feel poor inside a room. The lived experience depends on router placement, the number of residents online at night, building walls, and how quickly someone responds when the connection drops.
For students and professionals, internet reliability is less about one speed test and more about whether classes, calls, uploads, payments, and messages work without becoming a daily negotiation.
Test the spaces where you will actually use it
Common areas often have better signal than the corners of bedrooms. During a visit, stand near the study desk, the bed, and the doorway. If possible, check performance in the evening when more people are likely to be online.
- Ask whether bandwidth is shared evenly across floors
- Check if routers and network equipment stay on during outages
- Find out who residents contact when the network fails
- Look for dead zones before paying the deposit
Think about the busiest hour
Most connections feel fine when only a few people are using them. The real test is the crowded hour when residents stream, attend meetings, submit assignments, and call home at the same time.
A good PG should be able to explain how the network is maintained, not just mention that WiFi exists.
